50 Years Since New England Shed Closed To Steam

Nene Valley Railway Celebration of 50 Years Since New England Shed Closed To Steam.

New England Shed closed to steam on January 1st 1965. This commemorative event was held on the Nene Valley Railway on February 2015.

44767 on the Nene Valley Railway May 1996

LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 44767 on the Nene Valley Railway 11 May 1996.

LMS number 4767, BR number 44767 is a preserved steam locomotive. In preservation it carries the name George Stephenson though it never bore this in service. Built in 1947, 4767 was renumbered 44767 by British Railways after nationalisation in 1948. The loco was withdrawn from service in December 1967.

44767 was privately bought and put in storage until 1974 when it was taken to Thornaby for restoration by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group. It was then named after famous railway engineer George Stephenson.

The loco was based on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway before being taken out of service at the end of 2002 for a full overhaul. 44767 re-steamed at Morpeth, Northumberland, where she was overhauled, in December 2009. I believe that the loco is now at the North Norfolk Railway undergoing an overhaul.

Locomotive N0.3 Sir Haydn.
Built in 1878 by Hughes' Loco & Tramway Eng. Works Ltd of Loughborough this 0-4-2ST (originally 0-4-0ST) worked on the nearby Corris Railway until the closure of that line in 1948. In 1951 it was purchased by the Talyllyn Railway I think that Y Tren Carnifal means something like the Carnival Train.
 

Locomotive No. 4 Edward Thomas.

This 0-4-2ST was built in 1921 by Kerr, Stuart & Co. Ltd. for use on the Corris Railway, and was purchased by the Talyllyn in 1951 and named after the TR's former manager.

Stalwart of the fleet, rarely out of service, the second of the company's 1905 locomotives was named after company director, Dalrymple Maitland, and is fondly remembered by several generations of enthusiasts as the longest-serving fleet member. Having been in regular service since delivery, a re-boilering in 1959 ensured her future well into the final years of company operation, through the Ailsa years and into nationalisation

 

No. 11 Maitland is currently withdrawn from service and undergoing long-term re-build

 Illinois Central Railroad's 4-6-0 No. 382 that was involved in a now famous train wreck at approximately 5:00 a.m. April 30, 1900 at a little town named Vaughan in Mississippi. The engineer, John Luther (Casey) Jones was the only one killed. The legend of Casey Jones and the wreck of his passenger train known as the Cannon Ball were forever immortalized in a ballad 'The Brave Engineer,' by a black engine-wiper by the name of Wallace Saunders, a friend of the late engineer. The locomotive 382 was scrapped by the Illinois Central, July, 1935.

44767 Peterborough and the Nene Valley Railway 1996

 

LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 44767 Visits Peterborough and the Nene Valley Railway 12 May 1996.

London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) Stanier Black Five, LMS number 4767, BR number 44767 is a preserved steam locomotive. In preservation it has carried the name George Stephenson though it never bore this in service.

4767 was completed on the last day of the LMS, 31 December 1947 at Crewe Works. It was unique amongst the 842-strong class in that it featured outside Stephenson link motion in addition to other experimental features; a double chimney, Timken roller bearings throughout and electric lighting.

These modifications were part of a series of experiments by George Ivatt to improve the already excellent William Stanier-designed black five.

4767 was renumbered 44767 by British Railways after nationalisation in 1948. Its double chimney was removed in 1953. It was withdrawn in December 1967 after a working life of only 20 years.

Preserved Locomotives at Kadoma Zimbabwe 1994

Travelling by road from Harare to Kwekwe in Zimbabwe in April 1994 we stopped of at a motel in Kadoma for a 'Physical Needs Break' when across the road we noticed these old locomotives just standing there. Wonder if they are still there?
